Bronze Restoration and Brass Grabrail Refinishing

Neighbours Café, 1 Hotel Mayfair, London, England

bronze restoration at Neighbours Cafe Mayfair

Project Overview

Bronze restoration at Neighbours Café Mayfair was carried out as part of a wider programme of onsite restoration works at 1 Hotel Mayfair. Our team was asked to restore two tarnished brass seating area grabrails, along with bronze bar profiles and bar surfaces within the café environment.

The grabrails had become patchy over time, with areas of exposed brass visible through the existing finish. Our objective was to carefully prepare, restore and refinish the metalwork so it returned to a clean, consistent bronze tone that complemented the café’s luxury interior scheme.

Craftsmanship and Materials

The restoration process involved careful surface preparation, controlled abrasion and hand finishing to remove tarnish, patchiness and visible wear. The brass grabrails were treated to ensure the new bronze tone blended naturally with the surrounding interiors.

Our team also worked on the bronze bar profiles and bar surfaces, restoring depth and consistency across the visible metal features. Each element was finished with attention to tone, texture and durability, ensuring the completed surfaces retained the refined appearance expected within a premium hospitality setting.

On-Site Challenges & Considerations

As the works were completed inside an active hotel environment, planning and cleanliness were essential. The team worked over a 6 night period to reduce disruption to guests, staff and café operations.
The main challenge was achieving a consistent finish across metalwork that had worn unevenly. Some areas were more heavily tarnished, while others had exposed brass showing through. This required careful preparation before the final bronze tone could be applied evenly.

Working around finished interiors also meant that surrounding surfaces, furniture and flooring had to be properly protected throughout the process.

What the Client Said

No formal client testimonial was provided for this project. However, the works were completed to the hotel’s satisfaction at the time, with all agreed restoration tasks finished as part of the wider night works programme.

Final Result & Special Notes

The restored grabrails, bronze bar profiles and bar surfaces now present a cleaner, more consistent finish that complements the warm, refined interior of Neighbours Café.

This project is a strong example of how specialist onsite restoration can revive worn hospitality metalwork without the need for full replacement. By restoring the existing brass and bronze features, the hotel was able to preserve the original design intent while improving the visual standard of key guest facing areas.
